About downtown Jackson, MS
The City of Jackson was founded in 1821, on a bluff overlooking the Pearl River. Named in honor of General Andrew Jackson, who would later become the seventh United States president, Jackson is the Mississippi state capital and largest city in the state.
In 2009 the Jackson Convention Complex opened, covering 330,000 square feet. Among several dining options near the Jackson Convention Complex on Pascagoula Street are Flashbacks Centre Deli, Lamar Restaurant, and Palette Cafe, all of them on Lamar Street. There are a total of 30 bars and restaurants, including several ethnic restaurants, in downtown Jackson.
Cultural attractions include the Mississippi Arts Pavilion, Thalia Mara Hall, where both the Mississippi Symphony and Opera perform, plus Smith Robertson Museum, the Russell C Davis Planetarium, Old Capitol Museum, and Mississippi Art Museum. Several parades, festivals, and assorted events happen every year in downtown Jackson.
